Democratic MP, Agron Gjekmarkaj, is skeptical of the agreement between Albania and Italy on refugee camps, raising the question "who needs this".
During the discussion about the agreement that was signed a few days ago between Prime Minister Edi Rama and counterpart Giorgia Meloni, Gjekmarkaj said that it is unclear what Albania benefits from.
According to him, the agreement was not well received by the Italians.
"We must be grateful to Italy for what it has done for us in these 32 years. But the Italian society itself did not expect this from us. In Italy, there were accusations of dual racism of the Italian government. Racism for refugees and for Albania.
It is not clear to me why Albania offers itself? When it comes to land, Italy has lots of land. If it is a matter of Italy running away from its own laws, I have a hard time accepting it."
This agreement was not well received by the people of Lezhne either, said Gjemarkaj.
"I don't understand what Albania gains. In Lezha, this was not welcomed. A ghetto is created in a tourist area. It will be an open camp.
A concern of Europe these days is the export of terrorism. How Albania will deal with human rights problems. I don't know how to give it a name. If it is done as a personal investment, why should it be done at Lezha's expense? We waited for the Afghans, but they ran away from the war. They were elite people. Why should Lezha wait for everyone?"
"I don't know who this serves", added the MP.
