The former senior FBI official, Charles McGonigal, who was arrested yesterday, is accused of cooperating with a Russian oligarch in violation of the sanctions that the US had imposed on him since 2018 and of hiding thousands of dollars he received from a former employee of an Albanian intelligence agency while the latter was on duty.

This is what CNN writes about the charges against the 54-year-old arrested man, whose investigations had started a long time ago.

McGonigal is accused of having received 225,000 dollars from a former Albanian intelligence official and that he hid this from August 2017 until September 2018, when he retired.

With the money received from the former Albanian intelligence official, whose identity has not yet been released, McGonigal traveled abroad, and the indictment considers this to be a bribe taken by the former senior FBI official while he was in task.

Through his lawyer, McGonigal pleaded not guilty. According to CNN, one of the charges against McGonigal is that of concealing the connections he had with a former Albanian intelligence official, including receiving payments of up to 225,000 euros.

Prosecutors allege that during several trips abroad to Albania, Austria and Germany, McGonigal failed to convey the message of the US government and he met with the prime minister of Albania and a Kosovo politician.

According to the prosecutors, McGonigal, in the meeting he had with the Prime Minister, Edi Rama, asked the latter to be careful about granting licenses for oil drilling in Albania to Russian companies.

While according to the American media, the former Albanian intelligence employee gave 225 thousand dollars to McGonigal as he had a financial interest in the decision that the Albanian government would make about the contracts.

One of the cash payments, $80,000, was allegedly given to McGonigal while he was sitting in a car parked outside a New York City restaurant.

McGonigal's connection with Albania and Edi Rama

Once in Albania, according to the Department of Justice, he met with Prime Minister Edi Rama and discouraged him from granting Albanian oil field drilling licenses to Russian companies. McGonigal's Albanian contacts had a financial interest in those decisions, prosecutors say. / Taken from CNN
