An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck our country at 5 am this Tuesday.
The epicenter was in the village of Nikël in Kruja, but the tremors were felt in Tirana, Durrës and surrounding areas.
Seismologists at the Institute of Geosciences say that this earthquake had been showing signs since the beginning of the month.
"It had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, located 7 km northwest of Kamza, near the capital. From the assessments so far, we have seen that the activity in this area has started since June 6 and in total there have been 27 foreshocks. It is still being analyzed whether today's shock was the main one," says seismologist Damiano Koxhaj.
Although Albania is categorized as a moderate to high seismic country, this phenomenon for the capital was special due to its proximity to Tirana and depth.
"Along the territory we have small seismic activities. It is a common phenomenon for the territory of our country, for the capital it is an event, for this close distance to the capital a little special."
Seismologists say there is no room for panic, as aftershocks are also being recorded.
"The fact that we continue to have aftershocks based on the frequency and magnitude they have is a positive indicator so far that the situation may be heading towards calm."
Tuesday's tremors caused no material damage.
