A testimony given today in the Special Court brought back to attention one of the darkest criminal stories of recent years in Lushnja.
From the murder of Fridman Xhaferraj to bloody clashes between rival groups, the names, suspicions and witness accounts continue to reveal parts of a dossier where old friendships, family conflicts and accusations of revenge are intertwined.
Xhuliano Xhaferraj entered the courtroom in handcuffs. He came not as a witness to a crime he had seen with his own eyes, but as the brother of a victim who has sought for years to understand what happened to Fridman.
Giuliano was in prison when his brother was killed. He didn't get the news then. He only learned about it after he got out of his cell.
He told the court that, as soon as he had finished his sentence, he had gone to his father-in-law's house, where he found the police conducting searches. It was there that he learned that Fridman had been found dead in the Drenova reservoir.
A death that for the Xhaferraj family remained shrouded in question marks.
"When I spoke to him from prison, he told me he was going to flee the country, to Italy," he said.
According to his testimony, Fridman had thought about leaving Albania. His other brother had also set off for Greece. According to Juliano, people were involved in the trip who helped him with the ticket and transportation.
But after the murder, rumors began to circulate in Lushnja. And one of the names mentioned was that of Laert Haxhiu.
This is how they spoke in Lushnja
Xhuliano Xhaferraj said that he had also asked Laert Haxhiu's father if he knew anything about Fridman's murder.
According to him, there was talk in the city that Fridman had been near Laertes and that he might have been killed after speaking. But the witness himself did not confirm this version.
"I'm not sure, but that's what was said," he told the court.
In fact, at one point in his testimony, he took a stance that changed the tone of the accusation.
"I'm not at all sure that Laertes did this," Xhaferraj declared.
He said that the families had known each other for years and that Laert Haxhiu had kept Fridman close.
A relationship that is today seen in the light of a process where the prosecution claims the existence of a chain of conflicts and executions.
Laert Haxhiu's name has been linked by justice to one of the most serious criminal events in Lushnja.
On October 11, 2017, at the entrance to a bar, two young men, Zamir Latifi and Jurgen Hoxha, were executed with automatic gunfire.
Objektivi i dyshuar, sipas hetimeve, ishte Xhulio Shkurti, nipi i Aldo Bares.
On October 11, 2017, a masked man armed with a Kalashnikov approached the bar where the victims were and opened fire. Zamir Latifi and Jurgen Hoxha were killed on the spot, while other people were injured.
After several years of investigations, the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime found Laert Haxhiu guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment as the main perpetrator of this event.
The court's decision was based on the evidence administered during the trial and the conclusion that Haxhiu had a leading role in the organization and execution of the assassination.
In addition to the double murder in Lushnja, Laert Haxhiu's name has also been mentioned in other investigations into serious criminal events, where the prosecution has alleged his involvement in a series of conflicts and executions related to revenge between rival groups./ Shteg
