"Let's have a single shot of brandy."
It is the welcome sentence of every Albanian when a friend comes, whether he is a local or a foreigner. A tradition that shows the characteristic values of our country.
Like the cuisine, the traditional drinks are an important element of the country's cultural and historical identity, and by trying them, visitors can deeply discover the unique heritage and flavors of this rich culture.
For Albanians, these drinks are a way to celebrate, greet guests and create strong social bonds. For tourists, they are a way to get to know the culture and history of a country.
Each area of the country has its own special customs and traditions when it comes to traditional drinks such as brandy, cognac, craft beer, liqueurs and wine.
Their consumption by tourists is creating a huge profit for businesses, which are suffering from the decrease in domestic consumption.
Xhimi Begeja, head of the Association of Albanian Craft Micro Beers, but also a small operator in the market, with a production capacity of 700 to 750 liters per day, claims that his beer is mostly requested by foreign tourists.
He himself deals with its distribution in various bars throughout Albania and shows that he has guaranteed sales for the entire quantity produced, but he cannot increase the price, because consumption decreases.
"We distribute to restaurants more during the tourist season, as foreign tourists are the ones who demand our beer the most.
It is one of only four craft beers left in the country. My formula hasn't changed in 17 years. This is a good way to show tourists our drinks"
"Good soup, with a lot of ingredients, good soup in small pots, served fresh and quickly" - is the formula that Begeja uses for the production of Puka Beer, through open fermentation.
Like beer, wine and brandy are also highly sought after by tourists.
Olsi Risto, from Kantina Duka, says that the number of foreign visitors who do the wine or brandy tour has increased by 20-30%.
There has been a lot of interest in tours. Tourists are constantly looking for authentic products. Cooperation with agencies has increased and we need to organize different tours, including different packages for them, to better suit their requirements.
"In our country, wine is the most popular, but brandy is not left behind, as for many foreigners, tasting brandy is for the first time" - says Mr. Resto.
Albanians gladly share their knowledge about these drinks. They show how to enjoy them, provide the right appetizer and tell the stories and personal memories associated with them.
Tourists have the opportunity to discover the deep villages of the country, participate in traditional events and try authentic Albanian food and drinks.
Therefore, the many fairs organized during the summer were the right activities to promote these values. Throughout the summer in many cities, mainly those with many visitors, fairs and cultural activities were organized.
The cultural calendar of the cities is filled with fairs, concerts, traditional performances and art exhibitions
A clear example of the return of tradition are the summer festivals that take place in several cities of Albania.
The festivals include musical, gastronomic and craft performances, aiming to bring together young and old under a common roof where tradition and modernity are harmonized.
Singers and new music groups combine old rhythms with elements of contemporary music, creating a new field that respects the roots of Albanian culture.
Tourists throughout the season have had the opportunity to participate in concerts, traditional shows, art exhibitions, handicraft demonstrations and folk festivals, which have given a special experience to the local culture and traditions.
The Ministry of Culture declares that these shows have been extended especially along the coastline, to offer and enable a complete package of values and traditions, but without leaving aside other important cities of cultural tourism.
To promote and celebrate the local culture and economy, the Municipality of Durres organized one of these activities.
"Taverna e Adriatiku", at the height of the tourist season, this summer has multiplied the number of tourists in the coastal city and its surroundings.
Various wineries and agrotourisms, producers of olive oil, honey and numerous food products, Durrës' best quality pastry shops, and artisans of handwork turned the fair into an entertaining and educational experience for the many visitors.
"The visitors tried the best that Durrës offers to its residents and tourists. The fair turned into a public space dedicated not only to good taste, but also to music and entertainment" - said Floreta Këtusha, from the Directorate of Tourism in Durrës. /Monitor
