The Hague sentenced four former KLA leaders, what is expected to happen next

The Special Court in The Hague has announced the first instance verdict against four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi have been found criminally responsible and guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as unlawful detention, cruel treatment, torture and unlawful killing.

According to the court's decision, the combined sentences for each are:

Hashim Thaçi: 25 years in prison.

Jakup Krasniqi: 25 years in prison.

Kadri Veseli: 18 years in prison.

Rexhep Selimi: 13 years in prison

(including for all time spent in detention).

This decision is of first instance and the parties have the right to appeal it to other instances of the court, something that is expected to happen soon, according to the court's deadlines.

It is also clearly emphasized that this decision does not represent a judgment or conviction against the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) as a whole, but is given on the basis of individual criminal responsibility for the four aforementioned persons.
