It may sound incredible, and certainly a few years ago, with Greece in crisis and on the verge of Grexit, no one would have believed it, but Greece is going to send a man into space.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced this after a meeting with Adrianos Golemis. According to the plan, the launch is expected to take place within the next two years and the mission will last up to three weeks, as part of the new National Space Strategy, which foresees until 2035.
The decision was made on Thursday at a meeting at the Maximos Residence and announced on Friday morning.
Over the next two years, Adrianos will travel into space. It is an investment we are making as a country, which has both symbolic and substantial value.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: "A great moment for Greece"
Speaking at the presentation of the Greek space program and Adrianos Golemis' space mission, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said: "As for the symbolism, I don't want to say much more, but I would very much like Adrianos, who will bear this heavy responsibility, to convey above all to schools, to young children, why space matters."
"And to act as a catalyst of inspiration for a new generation that today is looking for hope in an environment that can sometimes seem very bleak. We all saw, I think, how closely the global public followed the 'Artemis' mission."
However, immediately after the news was published, social networks were filled with comments alluding that Adrianos Golemis may have Albanian and not Greek origins. Many users linked the surname "Golemis" to "Golem" and raised claims about his ancestry.
Some of the most prominent comments:
"Completely Albanian. There's an area in Durrës called Golem."
"Golemis? Adrian Golemi, Albanian."
"Adrianos Golemis is Albanian, not Greek."
"Golem sounds like an Albanian surname."
"Speechless! Since when does Adriano Golemis sound Greek?"
However, so far, the comments remain mere allusions, as there is no confirmation to support these allusions.
