Administrative trial against Dado, Veliaj: If they kidnapped me, they can kidnap
Erion Veliaj

Mayor Erion Veliaj arrived this morning at the Administrative Court of First Instance for the trial against prosecutor Ols Dado, where Veliaj claims that Dado was elected in violation of the law.

In this judicial process, other parties are the High Prosecutorial Council and the Presidency of the Republic. Meanwhile, several hearings have been held and the case is in the initial phase, where it is expected whether Veliaj, through his defense attorney Plarent Ndreca, will manage to legitimize himself to continue this lawsuit.

The focus of the session was also the request of the "National Association of Media and Justice" to be admitted as a party to the judicial process.

Veliaj's lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, requested that the court accept the association, arguing that the case is of broad public interest. According to him, the association itself has also raised concerns about the legal status of prosecutor Ols Dado and his connection to the January 21 case.

"When the status of a prosecutor is contested as illegal, we are not simply dealing with public curiosity, but with the right to information. Accepting this request would not burden the trial, but would make it more complete. The association would not violate the parties' rights to defense. According to us, the decree appointing Mr. Dado is invalid," declared Ndreca, asking the court to accept the request.

For his part, Erion Veliaj said that an "asymmetry" is being created in the process, claiming that institutions such as the High Prosecutorial Council and the State Attorney's Office are not participating in the trial.

"It is evident that an asymmetry is being created. Either the KLP does not show respect for this court, or it has understood what all of Albania knows, that Ols Dado is not a prosecutor and the mayor has been arrested. The mayor's mandate cannot be treated as loot. Someone has put on the state uniform and kidnapped me from the office," Veliaj said.

He added that the court's decision will have an impact on citizens' trust in justice.

"If they kidnapped me, they can kidnap anyone else. It is the weight of this trial that should restore faith in justice. My family misses me a lot in the most difficult days and I also miss my municipality that I left differently. Any party that shows interest contributes to this trial. I would ask that the association be accepted," declared the mayor.

The court is expected to decide on the request for the admission of the "National Association of Media and Justice" as a party to the proceedings.

Ols Dados' lawyer has opposed the association's request for intervention in the process, arguing that the evidence presented does not justify its inclusion as a party.

"We have an individual administrative act. The evidence submitted by the association's lawyer is a subpoena, with which the Administrative Court notified him of the case, which was in the preliminary phase. We request that the association's request for main intervention be dismissed," he said.
