The Supreme Court rejected the appeal of Genc Tafili, who sought freedom.
The member of the Supreme Court, Ilir Panda, has upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal, which in May 2021 decided to return him to prison, to serve the remaining years for the murder of Chief Commissioner Arben Zylyftari.
Tafili was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of Arben Zylyftari, the former chief police officer of Shkodra, which occurred in August 2000. Although he had to serve 25 years in prison, he was released in 2017 by the Court of Kruja, after served 17 years in prison by the judge of that time, Enkelejda Hoxha, who decided on conditional release.
Hoxha's decision was appealed to the Court of Appeal in May 2021 and demanded that Genc Tafili be arrested and sent to prison to serve the remaining years of his sentence. He was declared internationally wanted by the authorities and arrested 5 years later in Germany.
The operation where chief policeman Arben Zylyftari was killed
It was August 2, 2000. The police forces of Shkodra headed by Prelë Pjetrushin are on the trail of Bahri Tafili, a person wanted for murder for property issues. The wanted person is locked in the apartment together with Genci Tafili and from there they start armed resistance against the police.
Pjetrushi asked for reinforcements and Arben Zylyftari himself was placed in charge of the rapid intervention forces. During the exchange of fire, Zylyftari received a bullet in the chest and later died in Shkodra Hospital.
The police retaliated, where Bahri Tafili was killed, while his son, Genci Tafili, was arrested. Admir Tafili was also announced as wanted. The latter swore revenge and blamed Prelë Pjetrushi for the murder of his father. A few years later, an attack was launched against the latter, where he was seriously injured. Pjetrushi later leaves Albania, while Admir Tafili kills his two brothers, Nik and Gjovalin Pjetrushi.
For this crime he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment and continues to serve his sentence in the prison of Drenova. Kimete Tafili, the wife of Bahri Tafili and the mother of Admir and Genci Tafili, in 2010 stated that her husband was killed after he surrendered and was handcuffed by Prelë Pjetrushi and that the real perpetrators of the murder of Arben Zylyftari are at large.
