The Supreme Court left him in prison / Why did Erion Veliaj offer financial

For the second time in four months, the Supreme Court decided to say "no" to a request for Erion Veliaj's freedom.

A Criminal College rejected his appeal, thus leaving in force the security measure of “prison arrest” for the former mayor of Tirana, a measure he has been suffering since February of this year. In the High Court, the former senior official, who was taken into custody by SPAK for 5 criminal offenses, requested the replacement of the arrest measure with that of “financial guarantee”. The former mayor filed the request to be released from prison in the first week of September, but a few days ago, through his lawyers, he submitted additional material, updating the senior judges with developments in the Municipality of Tirana.

Through a memo, citing the decision of the Council of Ministers, Veliaj informed the Supreme Court that he had been dismissed as mayor. He requested that this fact be taken into consideration, as as such, it could not affect any type of evidence and could not pose any obstacle to SPAK.

Among the reasons why he should be released, the memo mentioned that his minor son's emotional well-being had deteriorated in the months of his absence from home, that his wife's passport had been blocked, thus posing no potential risk of leaving, and that their assets, or those claimed to be owned by them, had been seized.

But, all the allegations raised seem not to have convinced the Criminal College otherwise. The criminal file against Erion Veliaj and his 29 co-defendants is in the preliminary examination phase at the Special Court. In this file, the former mayor is accused of "corruption" in 9 episodes, "money laundering", "abuse of office", "concealment and failure to declare assets" and "bringing prohibited items into prison" in two cases. /A2CNN
