Linguist: Albanians will be bilingual in the future
Xhevat Lloshi

The linguist Xhevat Lloshi declared in the show "Arnautistan" that today we can no longer rely on the former principle that the spelling of Albanian should be as close as possible to the spoken language.

Lloshi says that Albanian has become an open language today, and Albanians will become bilingual in the future.

"50 years have passed since the Spelling Congress. It is a long enough period to arrive at a judgment of what really happened. The standard language took a certain form, it acted on the Albanian culture as a whole. We are obliged to consider a fait accompli.

The Albanian language has created a historical tradition. From this I started to say something else. The decisions of the Spelling Congress are historic because they were written 50 years ago, but also because they belong to history. Many colleagues have continued to write and speak with the same thoughts as 50 years ago. This worries me.

Turkishisms are no longer a problem of today's Albanian language. Albanian has become such a rich language and we don't worry about Turkish anymore. It is written that the word abandon should be removed because it is Turkism. It is said that the word abandon should be replaced by the word abandon. It is said to replace a foreign word with a Turkish one. We can no longer continue with those thoughts that were fruitful in their time, but time has passed.

There is no doubt that the spelling of Albanian has tried to be as close as possible to the spoken language. In 2022, this principle can no longer be. Not everything can be as they say. Albanian has become an open language today. In today's developments, it cannot be a closed language in the middle of Europe. Albanians will become bilingual. We are not in the same situation as before" - declares Lloshi.
