Full response:
The serious case reported in Korça with the dead baby requires great attention in terms of ethical reporting.
KSHM notes that in many cases, the articles of the code of ethics in this reporting have been violated.
First, ethics requires that in cases of serious events the media not sensationalize death or brutality. (Article 11 of the Code of Ethics of the Albanian Journalist). In the case of Korça, some media did not respect this by offering macabre details of the event which do not have to be part of the public interest.
Secondly, some media, in search of sensation, did not respect the dignity of the victims and their families (Article 12 of the Code of Ethics of the Albanian Journalist) by interfering unethically in the private life of family members (Article 9).
Third, some media outlets reported unprofessionally on the mental health illness of one of the protagonists, creating room for hate speech against those affected by mental health illness.
KSHM estimates that in this case and other similar cases, the approach of the media can make a big difference in the Albanian society and in the reaction of this society to such phenomena, which makes the responsibility of the media even greater and the role of its very important.
