France approves "assisted death" law, terminally ill people will be

The French National Assembly has voted to allow some people in the final stages of a terminal illness the right to end their lives with the assistance of medical personnel.

The bill, which is also supported by French President Emmanuel Macron, was approved with 305 votes in favor and 199 against.

It will then go to the Senate, before a second reading in the National Assembly.

Its supporters hope it will become law by 2027.

When it becomes law, France will become the eighth country in the European Union to allow assisted dying.

At the same time, another bill creating the right to use medications that only have a calming effect, otherwise known as “palliative care,” and not curative, was approved without opposition. It is estimated that one in two French patients who need palliative care do not receive it.

The BBC notes that currently, the French version is stricter than that of the Netherlands or Belgium, the first countries in Europe to legalize assisted dying.

After much debate over the law's provisions, French lawmakers concluded that it would apply to people "suffering from a serious and incurable illness that is life-threatening and in an advanced or terminal stage and who continue to suffer physically or psychologically."

The patient would have to be able to “freely express his intention.” He would have to wait 48 hours and then confirm the decision.

Once approved, the lethal dose would be administered by the patient themselves or by a medical assistant if the patient is unable to do it themselves. Approval would be given by a doctor, but only after consultation with colleagues.

Medical personnel who oppose assisted dying will not be forced to carry it out. However, they will be sentenced to up to two years in prison if they obstruct it.

Overall, the measure was voted for by the Center and the Left, while the Right was against.

Prime Minister François Bayrou, who is a devout Catholic, even said he would abstain if he had the right to vote.

However, he is not an MP and therefore did not participate in the vote.
