As the holiday season approaches, an entire family is left homeless in Montpellier.

An Albanian couple who fled their country and their four children, including a sick 20-month-old baby, still do not have emergency shelter despite daily calls to the emergency hotline (115).

For a week, they have been sleeping on the steps of Montpellier City Hall.

A support rally was organized on Monday evening in Montpellier by the associations "Un toit, un avenir et solidarité partagée" (One roof, one future and shared solidarity). Around sixty people gathered in front of the City Hall.

"This situation is unacceptable, children get sick because of the cold, it's always like this, we've seen families with children spend up to four months on the street, it's not normal, the prefecture is not playing its role," says the president of the Solidarité Partagée association, which has been following them for three weeks.

His goal is to make this family visible in the hope of changing things.

For its part, the Hérault prefecture maintains that this family is not a priority for access to emergency housing.

This decision is justified by the fact that they are in an irregular situation; their asylum application has been rejected, and the Montpellier administrative court also rejected their request for emergency accommodation on December 8.

Samuel Forest sees this justification as a failure to take the human element into account: " It's a situation that's not evolving, that's not changing, there's no goodwill ."

According to Samuel, the municipality of Montpellier, contacted by the association, is also mobilized on this issue.

A new meeting is scheduled for Sunday, December 21, at 2:00 PM on the steps of City Hall.
