What is hidden behind the physical clash between businessmen of the FINMAN
Sokol Agalliu

The partners of the company "FINMAN", Idajet Ismailaj and his nephew, Sokol Agalliu, are involved in a strong clash that has already gone beyond the doors of the family business and has ended in mutual accusations. At the center of the conflict seem to be property interests and control over a group of companies that extend their activity to some of the most profitable sectors in the country.

Sokol Agalliu, who owns 14.5 percent of the company's shares through his mother, accuses his uncle, Idajet Ismailaj, and the latter's son of raping him during an assembly meeting. On the other hand, the opposing party has also filed a complaint against Agalliu, turning the conflict into an open battle between two branches of the same family.

At the center of this seemingly banal family feud story is "FINMAN", the parent company that controls 11 companies, including "Arena Center", "AOS", "ASAB", "Manastiri Resort", "Albstar" and others.

A simple look at the Open Procurement and Open Data Albania data shows that “Albstar” alone, whether alone or in collaboration with other companies, has secured public contracts worth billions of lek over the years. The list of institutions that have contracted the company includes the Albanian Road Authority, the Albanian Power Corporation, the OST, the OSSH, the Municipality of Tirana, as well as the municipalities of Vlora and Fier, among many others.

But the group's weight is not limited to public tenders. The name "FINMAN" is also associated with the much-debated project in the Bay of Manastir, within the protected area of Butrint, an investment that has long sparked public debate and opposition from environmentalists.

Thus, while on the surface we have a family conflict between uncle and nephew, in the background lies control over a business empire that affects strategic sectors, from infrastructure to tourism and projects with a direct impact on the Albanian economy.

It is enough to see the list of public contracts won by “Albstar” to understand the economic weight of the group. Among them are the expansion of the Elbasan–Qafë Thanë road (Phase VI) with around 2.34 billion lekë, the construction of the Sheshi Shqiponja–Bulevardi i Ri–Shkozë segment with around 1.99 billion lekë, the construction of the Kardhiq–Delvinë road with around 1.78 billion lekë, the rehabilitation of the Fushë Arrëz–Reps road with around 770 million lekë and the rehabilitation of the Gjanica River in Fier with around 676 million lekë.

The list also includes the underground parking lot at Sheshi Italia in Tirana, the construction of building 2 in the Kombinat development area, energy projects for KESH, OST and OSSH, urban redevelopment in Vlora and Fier, as well as dozens of other contracts financed by the state budget.

For this reason, the clash between uncle and nephew is not simply a family story. It takes place at the top of a group of companies that have benefited from millions of euros in public funds over the years and that hold important infrastructure, energy and tourism projects in Albania.
