At a time when the Albanian prosecutor's office has suspended investigations against the notorious group of Iranian hackers on interventions in online systems in the summer of 2022, the interventions in the TIMS system, for which it was initially suspected that there had been interventions within the Albanian police, have not yet been concluded.
After the Iranian hackers and the termination of diplomatic relations between Albania and Iran, the Albanian accusation could not find the organizers.
Although letters were sent to several states, the answers seem distant. The file of attacks reached only some Albanian civil servants suspected of abuse of office for the reason that they had not updated the anti-viral systems.
Even the story of the intervention in the TIMS system in the summer of the year will apparently have the same conclusion.
In August 2023 the United States Chargé d'affaires, Martin Mc McDowell , after a meeting with Interior Minister Taulant Balla noted US concerns regarding the reported intrusion into TIMS systems at the State Police.
He urged a quick and comprehensive investigation and emphasized the importance of protecting personal/sensitive data, including that of American citizens in Albania.
The movement that was taken later towards the prosecution was the report of the Police Surveillance Agency, but at the same time the Minister of the Interior and the Prime Minister minimized the situation.
The story started with an e-mail sent to the Albanian Information Service and the media to denounce the theft of TIMS system data.
This e-mail was sent by a police officer and mentions by name those who received the TIMS data. According to the whistleblowers, the chain of command of Information Technology in the State Police uploaded the entire system to an external database.
But beyond the reactions which the opposition also connected with the Metamorfoza file and the interceptions on the Sky Ecc and Enchro Chat platforms, the Police Surveillance Agency reported the case to the prosecutor's office.
After August 2023, criminal proceedings were also registered for the offenses of "Misuse of duty" and "Unauthorized computer intrusion". But even though 6 months have passed since that time, no person has been detained or convicted in connection with the case, which joins the list of those cases for which investigations continue.
