The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, suffered a fractured leg while playing football during airing hours at the Durrës detention center.

The incident occurred about ten days ago.

Initially, Veliaj refused to go to the hospital.

But since his leg is swollen, Veliaj was rushed to a private hospital in Tirana today.

After undergoing radiological examinations and placing his leg in a cast, he was returned to detention.

The Mayor of Tirana has been in solitary confinement since February 2025, during which time the legal process against him has also begun.

Finally, on September 15, the Supreme Court decided to maintain the security measure "prison arrest" in force, after the Constitutional Court returned the file in May.

Veliaj's defense team has described this decision as unacceptable and is preparing to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
