An unusual robbery occurred at the apartment of Albanian Cardinal Ernest Simoni in central Florence, while he was in London for a meeting with King Charles III.
The thieves managed to enter the apartment by demolishing part of the wall and opening the armored door with chisels, then leaving with loot estimated at around 30 thousand euros.
According to "Corriere Fiorentino", the apartment is located in Piazza Duomo, in a Curia residence, where the 97-year-old lives together with his grandson, Toni Simoni, a restaurateur in Florence.
No one was home at the time of the robbery. The cardinal was in London, while Tonin Simoni and his wife had left the apartment at around 1:00 p.m. When they returned at 11:00 p.m., they were confronted with a scene of destruction.
The wall near the door had been chiseled, the armored door had been forced open, and every room had been searched. Wardrobes, suitcases, drawers, and chests had been opened one by one in search of valuables. The two chisels used by the perpetrators had been left in the hallway of the palace.
What most surprises investigators is the time it took the perpetrators to carry out the robbery. Breaking down the wall and opening the armored door required time and noise, yet no one reported anything, not even the priest who lives on the floor below the apartment.
"We never expected something like this. We thought we were safe. It's unbelievable that such a robbery would happen in Piazza Duomo, maybe even in broad daylight. It's a shame for the city," said Tonin Simoni.
According to him, the perpetrators did not act randomly.
"I'm convinced they had us under surveillance. They knew exactly that no one was home," he said.
Cash, some gold items, jewelry belonging to Tonini's wife, medals and a gold seal were taken from the apartment. Among the stolen items was Cardinal Ernest Simoni's residence permit, which was kept in a drawer.
"The theft of this document is strange. I don't understand why anyone would need it, unless they intend to forge it," said the cardinal's nephew.
The Carabinieri arrived immediately at the scene, while scientific police experts carried out an examination of the apartment in search of traces. Investigators are also analyzing the numerous security cameras in Piazza Duomo, one of the most monitored areas of Florence.
"Piazza Duomo is the most monitored area of the city. It's unbelievable that someone managed to do such a thing right here," said Tonin Simoni.
After the robbery, he immediately called his uncle in London to inform him. The cardinal's reaction, however, was not about the amount of money or the items lost.
"The first question he asked me was whether the thieves had touched the religious statues he keeps in his room, which looks like a small chapel. He asked me about the statue of Our Lady of Medjugorje and that of Padre Pio. When I told him they were all in place, he said: 'Then it doesn't matter,'" Tonin Simoni said.
