Erion Veliaj in prison, but the Territorial Reform Commission requests a hearing

The Special Parliamentary Committee on Territorial Reform has officially requested the presence of the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, at the hearing to be held on June 30 to discuss proposals and concerns related to the new administrative-territorial reform.

The chairman of the commission announced that the invitation was sent to the Municipality of Tirana according to the same standard that was followed for other municipalities in the country, emphasizing that the commission requested the presence of elected mayors and not deputy mayors or delegated representatives.

"We have set a standard. We have not listened to the deputy mayors, even when they were delegated by order. We send the invitation to the institution and the institution takes the appropriate measures to be represented by the person who has the right to be elected mayor of the municipality," he said.

The hearing for Tirana is considered one of the most important of the process, as it is the largest municipality in the country and the administrative unit that affects the largest number of citizens.

However, Veliaj's participation still remains unclear. The Commission is initially awaiting an official response from the Municipality of Tirana, while assessments and positions from competent institutions, including SPAK and judicial bodies, will then be needed to determine whether the mayor will be able to move from detention to participate in the Assembly.

In recent weeks, the commission has held hearings with a large number of mayors in the country, who have presented their proposals and observations on the new territorial reform. The case of Tirana is expected to be an institutional test for how the request for Veliaj's participation in the parliamentary process will be handled.

If the authorities give the appropriate approval, the mayor of Tirana could appear in the Assembly on June 30 to give his position on the territorial reform. Otherwise, it remains to be seen whether the Municipality of Tirana will be represented in another form or whether the hearing will take place without his presence.
