Edi Rama promises direct flights with the US

Prime Minister Edi Rama was present today at the inauguration ceremony of the airline between Albania and Canada. He emphasized that this development is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country's air connections.

He also expressed optimism about a major objective: the direct line with the United States.

"Our strategic objective is to soon have another direct line, the one with the United States. Progress has been made in relation to this objective as well, and I can say that we are much closer to finalization than we could have imagined just a few years ago," Rama declared.

The Prime Minister noted the extraordinary performance of Tirana International Airport, which has recorded record passenger growth.

"The data of Tirana Airport is extraordinary. Tirana Airport has held the first place in Europe for several years for the increase in the number of passengers. The changed figure of 9 years from 2016 to 2025 is enough to understand what a dizzying growth has occurred with Tirana Airport," he said.

Rama also announced a new chapter in the airport's development, focused on digital transformation and modernization.

"Soon, here we will open a new chapter of the digital transformation of the airport and its further modernization, the chapter of digital gates, which will be gates where entry will be made without any kind of control," said Rama.

According to him, the digital gateways will operate using artificial intelligence, making the process much simpler and faster, especially for Albanians.

"If you are Albanian and if you have an Albanian biometric passport, this will make it as if all Albanian passengers entering Rinas Airport were entering their home, and all information will be obtained through the artificial intelligence that this gate will have. The idea is to start with domestic passengers and immediately start with foreign passengers," Prime Minister Rama further underlined.

The inaugural flight from TIA takes place today, June 19, while operations will continue during the summer season until October 9, 2026, with a weekly frequency.

The new airline responds to the growing demand for direct flights not only between Albania, but also countries in the region and Canada, while it is estimated that around 60 thousand passengers travel in this direction annually, mainly for tourism, family visits and the needs of diaspora communities.
