Severe/ A 9-day-old baby dies in the NICU

A serious complaint has been registered at the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana regarding the death of a 9-day-old baby. The parents of the latter have contacted the director of QSUT Albana Fico and the director of the "Queen Geraldine" Maternity Eliona Demaliaj. Citizen A. D says that the birth of the baby went very well, it was born weighing about 4 kg.

After a few hours, it was found that the child had problems with oxygenation, where after examinations it was deemed necessary to check the heart. The parent says that the Albanian hospitals did not have specialists, medications or the relevant equipment for the treatment of such cases. It was decided to carry out the inspection at QSUT. The baby resulted in transposition of the great vessels of the aorta of the heart.

"The doctor told me that an immediate coronary surgical intervention was needed to expand the veins in order to facilitate the circulation of oxygen in the child's body. Every minute that passed, the child's life was in danger, and the intervention was urgent," says the baby's father in the report.

"He suggested to me that the drug for treatment was not available in the public sector, and that I should look for it privately," he adds, as the name of the drug was Alprostoglandine PGE 0.5 mg. According to the baby's father, the medicine was available from a private hospital in Tirana, where, despite the high costs, he managed to secure 5 pieces.

According to him, it is the duty of the state to provide this medication for babies with these complications.

The doctors with whom the father discussed this problem suggested that he perform the operation abroad (Italy), where the cost was over 40,000 euros. Otherwise, he should turn to the foundations that assist in such cases. Although it was possible to perform an operation at QSUT, in the conditions where no other way was found and not in the right conditions, the baby died only one day later (August 25, 2023).

In the report, the citizen AD says that he and his wife have been paying social and health insurance for about 30 years and only in one case when they were asked for help from their state, they did not find it.

The citizen who lost the 9-day-old baby has reported the officials of the institutions for abuse of duty and says that he took this initiative in order to take measures so that other parents do not find themselves in such a situation in the future.

Now, it remains in the hands of the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana if it will register the report to investigate what happens to the newborn babies who may have such complications.
