Albanian Imam who ran a criminal network and defrauded millions goes on trial in

A court case of extraordinary proportions began this Tuesday in Dietikon, Switzerland, where at the center of the accusations is a 57-year-old Kosovar, who was known as an imam in the canton of Aargau.

According to the Swiss newspaper "20 Minuten", this person, who preached kindness to his followers on social networks, is now accused by Swiss justice as the mastermind of a complex economic crime scheme that has caused damage worth millions of francs.

The voluminous indictment of over 200 pages charges not only the imam, but also a wide family circle, including his ex-wife, daughter, three sons and two other associates. In total, eight people are facing justice for a series of crimes spanning a ten-year period. However, the main accused person was not present at the opening of the trial. He is currently in a psychiatric clinic and has announced through his lawyers that he is unfit to stand trial, which has prompted the court to request an independent medical examination.

The Swiss prosecutor's office has listed 20 charges against the 57-year-old. He is suspected of operating with a ruthless strategy: deliberately leading his companies into bankruptcy, misusing mortgage loans for private purposes instead of promised renovations, and using fictitious companies to extort bank loans.

An important part of the accusation is also related to the pandemic period, where the imam is suspected of having benefited from over half a million francs through COVID-19 loan fraud.

In addition to financial crimes, the imam is also accused of defrauding immigration authorities. He is suspected of declaring fictitious monthly salaries for his ex-wife and sons, in order to secure them residence permits in Switzerland through forged documents.

His 27-year-old daughter, who now faces deportation from the country where she was raised and educated, tearfully declared that she had signed every document her father gave her without ever questioning his authority. His ex-wife and accountant have also used a similar line of defense, claiming that they were “blinded” and manipulated by the imam, who presented himself everywhere as a successful and powerful businessman.

In light of these facts, the state prosecutor has requested a harsh sentence of 7.5 years in prison for the imam and his deportation from Switzerland for a period of 15 years. Suspended sentences and bans from practicing their profession for several years have been requested for the other family members. This process is expected to last until the end of January.
