A promise of a better life in Italy ended in years of violence, fear and humiliation for an Albanian woman and her two children. An 80-year-old man from Presicce-Acquarica, in the province of Lecce, has been sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in prison for domestic abuse and wounding, following a trial that uncovered a series of serious episodes of violence that occurred between 2017 and May 2021.

The decision was made by the First Criminal Section of the Court, which also ordered the convict to be banned from exercising public functions for five years. The court set a preliminary compensation of 25 thousand euros for the wife and the minor son, as well as 10 thousand euros for the adult daughter, while the full compensation will be determined in civil proceedings. The prosecution had requested a sentence of six years in prison.

According to the investigation, the man had brought the much younger Albanian woman to Italy, along with her two children from a previous relationship, promising her a new family and a chance to leave her economic difficulties behind. However, according to the indictment, their life soon turned into a nightmare.

The prosecution proved that for years the family lived under a regime of constant psychological and physical violence. The husband controlled every movement of the wife and children, did not allow them to go out freely, prevented them from attending school regularly and even denied them moments of rest. They were forced to wake up in the early hours of the morning to clean the apartments they rented.

The violence was constantly accompanied by insults and threats. He called them “parasites” and “dogs,” repeating that he was in charge and that they had to obey him. On several occasions, he threatened to kill them if they did not leave the house.

One of the most serious incidents occurred in October 2017, when the boy, then only six years old, was violently hit and crashed into a radiator. The child suffered a head wound with heavy bleeding and was rushed to Trikaza Hospital for medical attention.

According to the accusation, the girl was also a victim of violence several times. She was slapped on various occasions, while in one episode the man went all the way to the beach, where he severely insulted her and threatened her while holding a stone in his hand.

When the woman expressed a desire to leave, the situation escalated even further. According to the investigative file, he grabbed her by the throat and told her he would kill her. On another occasion, he also threatened the son, telling him that if the mother did not leave with the two children, he would kill all three of them.

The investigation began after the woman and her daughter repeatedly presented themselves to the emergency room of the Trikaza hospital, where doctors found injuries that raised suspicions of domestic violence. Subsequent investigations reconstructed a long history of abuse, threats and constant control, which ended with the conviction of the 80-year-old. /Corriere Della Sera/
