The Chamber of Advocates of Albania has reacted regarding the violence exercised today against the lawyer Sokol Mêngjesi.

PRESS STATEMENT

The Bar Association of Albania expresses its deep concern regarding the serious physical violence exercised, this morning, against lawyer Sokol Mengjesi, a member of the Bar Association of Tirana. The lawyer was hit several times on the head with a crowbar and due to the injuries received, he was hospitalized.

This is not an isolated case of physical and psychological violence against lawyers in Albania, recalling the last unprecedented act of physical and psychological violence against a lawyer in the Lezhe Bar Association, in April of this year.

Threats to lawyers, especially for reasons related to the exercise of their duties, not only seriously harm the mission of the lawyer in the exercise of his profession, but create difficult situations that must be evaluated to the maximum.

Based on the above, the Chamber of Advocates of Albania requests the official authorities to conduct a complete and independent investigation within the shortest possible time regarding this serious event.

At the same time, we guarantee all lawyers in the Republic of Albania that the Bar Association of Albania will be on the side of every lawyer who is subjected to violence of any kind by anyone, regardless of who directs the violence.

We are confident that our reaction will serve as an alarm bell for the law enforcement bodies not only for this case but also for other cases that affect the safety of the lives of lawyers and their families.
