Telephone scams have become a real scourge in Greece, with organized groups setting up call centers to mainly scam the elderly and expanding their activities beyond Greek borders.
The Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis , described the irritating phenomenon, announcing the creation of a permanent operational structure to deal with it.
"Telephone scams are an epidemic in our country. The scammers are mainly Roma," Chrysochoidis emphasized, speaking to Mega.
"These people have turned to criminality and are slowly turning to this crime, which is terrible. In the sense that they very easily take people's property. And this is tragic, it is dramatic," he noted.
Call centers in Albania, Skopje and Bulgaria
"Today we have a meeting to further see how we will create strong structures to face this problem. Because it is not just Greek, it is pan-European," the minister noted. "There have been major investigations and arrests, many of them are in prison. But at the same time, they are multiplying from behind," he said.
The most worrying element, according to Mr. Chrysochoidis, is the international dimension that the phenomenon has now taken on. As he said, the groups are not limited to Greece, but are creating networks in different countries.
"I mean, there's a call center in Albania, for example, there's a call center in Skopje, in Sofia," he noted, explaining that these are "specific transnational groups" that collaborate on fraud.
At the same time, their activities are not limited to telephone scams,
as, as he mentioned, there are also electronic scams involving much larger sums of money.
Mr. Chrysochoidis referred to the major operations and arrests that the Greek FBI and Attica Security have made, emphasizing that a more permanent and organized response to the phenomenon is now required.
The minister, however, appeared categorical about the outcome of the battle with the gangs. "Be sure of this: We will arrest them all, we just need a permanent structure and a permanent operational policy to put an end to this thing ," he stressed.
