Uk: We do not notify the families of asylum seekers who die in our shelters

The Home Office has admitted that in cases where asylum seekers living in the UK pass away or end their lives, they do not disclose or disclose information.

This is not to make the mental health and psyche of asylum seekers arriving illegally in britain.

The finding follows 176 deaths in asylums since 2020, and a doubling of the number of people who kill themselves, including the case of 27-year-old Durres man Leonard Farruku.

In 2022, 46 people died while being held in Home Office asylum facilities, more than double the number of people who lost their lives in 2021.

NGOs have recently warned that asylum seekers are at particularly high risk of suicide, partly due to Home Office policies, like the introduction to mass housing sites such as Wethersfield in Essex and the Bibby Stockholm maunia in Portland, Dorset.

The Home Office has confirmed it is making available less information about these deaths than it previously did.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has come out against the practice, followed by the Home Office, ruling that information should be provided on every case.

The Home Office gave information that there were five deaths between January and June last year, with one confirmed as suicide.

But refused to give other details like age, gender and nationality, citing a section of the Freedom of Information Act that gives the right to withhold information if it is likely to "endanger the physical or mental health of any family members" or their safety.

In its ruling, the ICO said the Home Office had explained to him that when someone died in asylum accommodation, it was not standard practice to contact his relatives.

The family of Leonard Farrwick, who killed himself while sheltering in the Bibby Stockholm maune, in December 2023 told the Guardian the Home Office had not informed them of his death.
