A quantity of explosives exploded at around 02:00 after midnight in the village of Berdenesh, Saranda.
In information provided by the Directorate of Prisons to tch in October last year, it appears that for the period January 2020-September 2025, 134 people lost their lives within the walls of their cells, while 5 others were declared dead in the first three months of 2026.
Official data lists 2024 as the year with the highest number of serious incidents inside prisons.
32 convicts serving their sentences have lost their lives, with 31 cases classified as health causes and one case as suicide.
A similar picture is presented in 2023, where out of 25 deaths in total, 23 are related to health causes, while one suicide and one murder case were recorded.
Here too, most of the victims died in hospitals, which indicates the serious health condition of the convicts.
In 2022, 17 deaths were recorded, again dominated by health factors, while 2 suicide cases were also recorded. Meanwhile, in 2021, out of 19 deaths in total, 17 were due to health reasons and 2 were due to suicide.
The year 2020 presents a similar situation: 26 prisoners have lost their lives, with 21 cases due to illness and 5 cases being suicides.
Last year alone, over a 9-month period, 15 deaths were recorded, with 14 of them related to health causes and one case being suicide.
The data clearly shows that the main problem in the penitentiary system remains the health of prisoners, with a high number of deaths occurring as a result of diseases.
On the other hand, although in lower numbers, suicide cases remain another alarm for institutions./ tch
