The appointment of Skënder Hitaj as head of the State Police has sparked debate on the political scene, just hours after the decision was approved by the Council of Ministers. While the government calls this a step towards strengthening order and security, reactions from the opposition have not been lacking.

Sali Berisha described Hitaj as Belinda Balluku's man.

But the Minister of Interior, Besfort Lamallari, said that Hitaj is a figure with long experience in the police ranks, describing him as a career officer who has stood out in several circles of the country for his performance.

The Minister also underlined that the selection was not a unilateral decision, but part of a process supervised by international partners, including representatives of the European Union, who were present during the interview and assessment phases.

"Mr. Hita is a career officer, I have had the opportunity to cooperate for 9 years since I had the honor of joining the Ministry of Interior and he has been a leader in several regions of the country, where he has stood out for his professionalism, integrity and I am very happy that as one of the most appreciated candidates of the competition supervised by international partners, especially those of the EU who have been present throughout the interviews, his contribution has stood out", he said.
