Albanian citizens, but not only Britons and Americans who want to enter the Schengen area, even for vacations next summer, will have to pay a tax of 7 euros. This is because the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (Etias) will enter into force in 2025.

Under this system, citizens of non-EU countries, including those of the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada, will have to complete, at a cost of exactly 7 euros, a form to request exemption from visa before entering the European Union. This includes not only Cyprus and Ireland, which are outside the system, but also Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, which are not part of the EU, but they are in Schengen: so a total of 29 countries.

As the Commission explains in a note, Brussels is developing a new border and entry management system that ensures national and European systems can communicate with each other.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will automate border checks and digitally record short-stay visa holders and visa-exempt travelers whenever they cross external borders for a short stay (up to 90 days in a total of 180 days).

Etias will introduce a new travel application for tourists, who will have to apply for a travel authorization by completing an online form and paying a fee of 7 euros.

The authorization will last for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. The new system is expected to be adopted in January 2025, but there will be a "six-month transition period".

Travelers under the age of 18 or over 70 will be exempt from paying the tax.
