Carabinieri raided the three apartments of Vittorio Sgarbi this evening, under investigation for "cleaning of cultural assets". The raid was ordered by the prosecution in the case of the painting "The Capture of Saint Peter" by the painter Rutilio Manetti, from the 16th century.
The painting appears to have been stolen more than a decade ago, from the castle of Buriasco in Piedmont, but in 2021 it reappeared in an exhibition in a version described as "unpublished" owned by Sgarbi.
The painting, which is worth hundreds of thousands of euros, was seized from Sgarbi, who in Meloni's government holds the position of state secretary for Culture.
Carabinieri of the Heritage Protection Unit, by order of the chief prosecutor Giovanni Narbone, have raided the three apartments of the art critic in Marche, Rome and one in Ro Ferrarese.
The police also seized computer equipment and documents.
Sgarbi himself commented on the operation of the Italian authorities.
"I have submitted the painting itself so that all the necessary checks can be carried out. I am absolutely calm. The seizure is a necessary action. I have nothing to fear. I will defend in every way against those who speculate on this matter and those who become complicit in it", he declared.
Sgarbi claims that his painting is the original version of The Arrest of Saint Peter, which he says he found during the restoration of an abandoned villa bought by his mother in Viterbo in 2000, and that the painting stolen from the castle was a bad copy produced in the 19th century.
