Another part of the audio of the security measure hearing for the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, held on February 12, 2025 at the Special Court, is published.
In the audio of the hearing, which the lawyer withdrew from the court and made available to the accused party and which Report TV published, it is heard as the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, defending himself in front of prosecutors Ols Dado and Altin Dumani and judge Erjon Bani, demands to know the reason why he is in prison and away from his duties as mayor.
During the hearing, the prosecutor addresses Veliaj, saying that he is a 'pathological liar' and at one point even 'he is very dirty', and at another point they tell him that they will surprise him, which forces the judge to draw his attention.
In the February 12th hearing, Judge Erion Bani confirmed the security measure of 'prison arrest' for Erion Veliaj on charges of passive corruption in 9 cases and money laundering. Veliaj is currently in custody in Durrës.
Excerpts from the conversation heard in the audio:
Judge: Mr. Veliaj has the floor. Then, without… I believe you have noted what you have… let's not just repeat what you have… you can add something else, whatever you want, just not the same things in what you quoted.
Erion Veliaj: Thank you, honorable Mr. Judge, but the only thing I didn't hear is why am I in prison? So, I heard everyone, but I didn't hear from the prosecution, why am I in prison? So, Mayor of Tirana, voted by the people, in office, opening kindergartens and nurseries. I didn't hear, why am I in prison? So, I heard wrong justifications, I like them, I don't like them, for everyone, I didn't hear about myself. Why am I in prison? Why am I in prison? Why am I away from my family? Why am I away from my duty when I have done this duty with great dedication. And what I find is that a vetting is happening here. A vetting! We also discussed it with the prosecutor and he said: How good we said, that you made us a mess for the vetting, now it's your turn. Now this doesn't work like that. Oh, let's have a vetting law for politicians and I can think about it, I'll get involved, we didn't get involved in this...
[Prosecutors intervene, but it is not heard well on the audio]
Erion Veliaj: Because, honorable judge, when you refer to those materials about charter trips, they are those of Sava Tours...
Prosecutor: You are a pathological liar...
Erion Veliaj: We are talking about trips from these…
Prosecutor: He is a pathological liar...
Erion Veliaj: …Antalya, Bodrum, 2004, 2006…
Prosecutor: You are a pathological liar. You are a person who lies.
Erion Veliaj: ...I was 24 years old, 26 years old, 27 years old in 2007, what does it have to do with it? So, this is a vetting of my life.
Prosecutor: ...it's very dirty.
Erion Veliaj: So, Nesti Angoni, who is an instrument in this case, to vet my life when there is no vetting law. So, we are not guilty, we do not have an incinerator, we do not have 5D, but we will definitely catch this one. That is what we have for this one's entire life. So, what am I being accused of? None of the prosecutors said. Why am I in prison today? This is very important. And the application of a law that is for other people... to know that there was a vetting law that I have to check all the planes I get on, where I get off, who else is on the plane... Bin Laden could have been on the plane too, who knows? I do not scan planes when I get on. So, it seems excessive to me, so the presumption, the insinuation, these little tricks that you see that you started in 2004. in 2004 what? I was throwing toilet paper at Albtelekom in 2004. I was taking those donkeys for the education budget. So, what did I start in 2004 that is evidence… well, Gent Sula bribed me in 2004 because I was on a plane…
Prosecutor: No one told you that, no one told you that!
Erion Veliaj: This is very important. Secondly, secondly...
[Judge draws attention]
Prosecutor: You are saying untrue things, Mr. President...
Erion Veliaj: Now I heard it, Mr. President...
Prosecutor: No vetting law either.
Erion Veliaj: ...he needs to listen.
(The judge draws attention)
Prosecutor: You have them recorded, you have them recorded, sir.
Erion Veliaj: You can listen to me, because I listened to you.
Judge: Prosecutor!
Erion Veliaj: Once again! Don't wave your hand like that because I heard you...
Judge: Prosecutor!
Prosecutor: Liar, liar, liar.
Prosecutor: You're pathological! You're pathological!
Erion Veliaj: This is an unequal situation.
Judge: Prosecutor!
Prosecutor: You have it all recorded...
Judge: Prosecutor!
Prosecutor: I'll make this a surprise too.
Judge: Prosecutor!
Prosecutor: Hey!
Judge: Then the court...
Erion Veliaj: Mr. Speaker,
Judge: Then...
Erion Veliaj: This is unequal…
Judge: Then, the court informs you that, regardless of what he says, we must respect, as Mr. Veliaj heard you, and you must listen to him. That's how he perceived it, that's how he's saying it. Continue!
Erion Veliaj: So, honorable Speaker, this is an unequal situation. I am in prison and I did not hear why… /Report.tv
