The Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, has today signed the dismissal of the director of the Durrës Penitentiary Institution, Indrit Cërloj. The decision comes a day after the escape of pre-trial detainee Altin Ndoci while the latter was sent for a medical check-up to the city hospital.

In addition to dismissing the director, Lamallari has requested from the Director General of Prisons a new plan for security assessment and redistribution based on the dangerousness of convicts and detainees at the Durrës Penitentiary, also considering transfer to other high-security prisons.

Immediately after yesterday's event, the Minister of Justice requested the General Director of Prisons and the Director of the Internal Control Service of the Prison System to make maximum efforts with the Prosecutor's Office to clarify the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

Likewise, yesterday, the entire chain of command of the Durrës Penitentiary Institution was immediately suspended from duty. Preliminary verifications show that the Durrës Penitentiary Institution did not report to the General Directorate of Prisons either the planning or the implementation of the medical visit for the planned escort, in violation of the by-laws in force. It also turns out that the standard procedures for the escort of pre-detainees and convicts were not respected. Meanwhile, 8 people were put in handcuffs today:

* Commissioner Dezdemon Pazaj – Prison Police Employee;
* Commissioner Violeta Uka – Prison Police Employee;
* Chief Inspector Dorjan Saraçi – Prison Police Employee;
* Inspector Sali Ferrollari – Prison Police Employee;
* Inspector Fatjon Braçi – Prison Police Employee;
* Inspector Preng Marvataj – Prison Police Employee;
* Chief Inspector Aranit Çela – Prison Police Employee;
* Chief Nurse Aulon Quku – Durrës Penitentiary Institution Employee.
