Public Radio and Television in Montenegro has raised the alarm about drugs being smuggled into the country via land and water routes from Shkodra.
According to the media, a few days ago in the village of Zbelj, Tuzi, a vehicle was stopped for speeding beyond the speed limit.
The checks revealed 95 packages of marijuana, coming from Albania.

"After police officers from the Regional Border Police Center "Centar", in cooperation with officers from the Department for the Suppression of Cross-Border Crime, prevented the smuggling of more than 100 kilograms of marijuana a few days ago in the village of Zbelj, Tuzi Municipality, attention was again drawn to the fact that there are a large number of illegal routes from neighboring Albania into our country.
"During intensified activities and surveillance of the wider state border area, we noticed a passenger vehicle moving at high speed. The vehicle was later found without a driver at a location in the city of Vranje," the Police Directorate announced.
A detailed inspection revealed 95 small PVC packages containing green plant matter, similar to marijuana, with a total weight of about 107 kilograms. It is suspected that the drug was smuggled from the Republic of Albania. Two years ago, police officers found 57 kilograms of marijuana on the coastal part of Lake Shkodra, on the banks of the Moraça River channel, near the Zeta railway station.
Even then, a well-informed interlocutor of the RTCG Portal recalled that between Montenegro and Albania, in that area, there are several illegal crossings that are almost unknown to ordinary citizens, but are very well known to various smugglers and smugglers.
“One of these roads leads directly through Lake Skadar, from the Albanian village of Zogaj to Mount Ostros,” says this interlocutor.
According to him, the road from Bajza and Alaja, or Shkodra, also passes through Lake Skadar and ends in Golubovci.
"You can also travel by car from Albania to Montenegro via the road from Zogaj - Valas, and beyond the border point from Albania to Tuz, there is a road from Shkodra via Kopilik. There are probably several other illegal crossings in this segment that only smugglers know about," says the interlocutor of our portal.
The RTCG portal has previously written in detail about all illegal border crossings on the territory of Montenegro towards its neighbors, especially towards Albania.
Near Ulcinj, there is an illegal road from the Albanian town of Velipoje that leads to Donji Štoj.
"The Sukobin border crossing is bypassed in the Albanian towns of Shas and Dajci. These are two very well-known illegal crossings. From Albania, further north, you can reach Guci via illegal routes in only two places," says our source.
There are many more illegal routes in Montenegro towards its neighbors, bypassing official border crossings, than those that are officially registered, and they are very difficult to control at any time, which smugglers know how to use.
In light of recent information and police operations, the routes from Albania to Montenegro in the Lake Skadar region are particularly interesting and are mainly used for marijuana smuggling.
Albania has long been known as one of the world’s largest producers of marijuana and skunk. Despite the police operations carried out in that country in the village of Lazaret, it is clear that this production is still very developed, and smuggling channels to Western Europe often lead directly through Montenegro. If an operation in the Tuzi area discovered 107 kilograms of marijuana, which is believed to have been imported from Albania, the question arises – how many narcotics then enter our country every day through these routes?
The scale of drug production and smuggling is also shown by data previously published by the American agency AP. According to this agency, the Albanian village of Lazarat bears the epithet of a “marijuana factory” with an annual production of about 900 tons of cannabis and “exports” of narcotics with a market value of an incredible four and a half billion euros.
According to the United Nations, the global value of the illegal marijuana trade is $140 billion. Skunk smuggling in Albania is carried out mainly by four mafia clans, and in light of the financial data on these businesses, which are of industrial proportions, it is clear that Montenegrin criminal groups also easily find their interest. How profitable the trade of this drug is in the Balkans is shown by the data that the Balkan narcotics market has been flooded with Albanian “weed” for decades.
The highest quality marijuana in Albania costs 2,000 euros per kilogram, and in the poor markets of this region alone, in Skopje, Podgorica, Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb, it sells for 5,000 euros per kilogram. According to some data, the drug mafia sells over 117 tons of Albanian marijuana every year in the Balkans alone.
