Feeling endangered, residents of the former Kënetë area in Durrës protested this Thursday, raising concerns about the lack of road safety in their neighborhood.
The neighborhood's streets remain unlit, without horizontal and vertical signage, while the works that began about 5 years ago have not yet been completed.
This situation, according to residents, makes pedestrian movement extremely dangerous.
"The road is not finished yet, it started in May 2021. All vehicles are forced to pass only in one direction of the road, which is not the right width and without signage," says Shyqyri Myrtollari, chairman of the Durrës FRPD.
They claim that the road is being driven at very high speeds, up to 150 km/h, despite the fact that the permitted speed limit is 30 km/h for residential areas.
"If you build a wall there, the police will come 10 times a day. For speeding, for disturbances, sometimes moving at 150 (km/h), no one thinks about it at all," says a resident.
Representatives of the youth of the FRPD in Durrës also raised their concern about the situation, demanding the punishment of irresponsible leaders.
"Vehicles here circulate at very high speeds and there are no police vehicle checks," says Myrtollari.
This is the third protest after the tragedy in the former Kënetë, where residents demand the completion of infrastructure works and increased police controls in this area, also known as "New Durrës".
The accident occurred on May 3, where two children, ages 10 and 12, lost their lives and another was injured after they were hit on the sidewalk by their neighbor, Nikoll Radaçi, who was driving his car at high speed while intoxicated.
