Democratic Party MP Xhelal Mziu has been sued for defamation in the Special Court by the former mayor of Burreli, Agron Malaj, who was elected MP under the Socialist Party banner.

The lawsuit came after a statement made by Xhelal Mziu the day before the May 11 parliamentary elections, that the vehicle used by Malaj distributed money in exchange for votes.

The first session at the GJKKO was postponed because the Democratic MP was absent, while only Malaj was present. The Democratic MP had announced that he could not be present at the first reconciliation session, and the next session was scheduled for July 21.

On May 10, 2025, one day before the elections, an incident occurred where Democratic Party supporters stopped a vehicle, claiming that the people in it were distributing money with the aim of buying votes in favor of the Socialist Party.
