The Spanish National Police have arrested in Tarragona, Catalonia, 42-year-old Albanian Taulant Toma, wanted by Italian justice and widely known as the "escape wizard". The operation to capture him ended an international search that lasted several months after his sensational escape from the maximum security prison in Opera near Milan, on December 7, 2025.
According to investigative sources , the fugitive put up strong resistance during the moment of arrest. This marks the end of the escape for Toma, who has four escapes from prisons in his file: three in Italy and one in Belgium.
The dynamics of a "classic" escape
The latest incident that put the 42-year-old in the spotlight was the security breach at the Opera prison in Milan. Toma, who was supposed to stay behind bars until October 2048, used a method that was both classic and daring. Italian authorities report that he cut through the bars of his cell window and used sheets tied together to lower himself from the height, then disappeared into the darkness.
It remains unclear to investigators how the prisoner managed to get over the outer perimeter walls and whether he was helped by accomplices waiting outside the perimeter. After the December incident, numerous police forces, including the Central Investigation Unit, set up checkpoints and expanded searches throughout the Milan area, but the Albanian had managed to cross the border.
Taulant Toma was a well-known figure in the Italian prison system. His most sensational case before this one was in 2013, when he managed to spectacularly escape from Parma prison together with another convict.
Toma's escape from one of the most secure prisons has once again highlighted the deep crisis in the Italian penitentiary system. Gennarino De Fazio, General Secretary of the Prison Police Union (Uilpa), raised concerns at the time about structural conditions and severe staff shortages.
"The full dynamics are still unclear, but this episode confirms the failure of prison policies pursued in the last 25 years. In the Opera prison, overcrowding is at 153%, with 1,338 prisoners for only 918 places, while police staff are drastically understaffed," said Gennarino De Fazio.
With his arrest in Tarragona, the "escape wizard" is expected to undergo extradition procedures to Italy to continue serving his sentence until 2048, in addition to the new sentences that will be imposed on him after this latest escape.
