"I got into an argument with my wife at home and came out with a gun"

Gëzim Këlmendi, a 40-year-old from Mitrovica, but residing in Tirana, was arrested by the capital's police operative in the "Dry Lake" area, after he had an Austrian pistol of the "Glock-GES" brand with him.

The weapon was equipped with a magazine of 16 live ammunition. However, at the time of his arrest, Këlmendi himself indicated that he had a 5-year permit from law enforcement agencies in Albania for the pistol.

However, from the verification conducted by the police, it resulted that Gëzim Këlmendi's gun permit had expired 1 year ago and according to the verifications, the permit specified that the firearm should be kept in the home and not in public places, streets or other places, reports journalist Elton Qyno.

Given this situation, Gëzim Këlmendi has been arrested by the capital's police. A few days ago, the Tirana court imposed the security measure "House Arrest" on him.

During questioning, Gëzim Këlmendi told the police that: "...I have had this weapon with a permit for a period of 5 years with the right to renew it only for the apartment since 2020...".

Këlmendi continued his story, adding that on August 21, 2026, he had a word with his wife and, in a fit of rage, left the apartment, but he remembered the gun he had in the safe and immediately returned to the apartment because his wife knew the code to open the safe, so he took the gun and left the house.

On the way to where Gëzim Këlmendi was going to sleep at a hotel, he was stopped by the Police services who escorted him to the Police Station.

"...the gun that was found is mine and I only learned at the police station that the pistol's permit had expired. I told the police from the very beginning that I had a gun with me and I also told them the reason why I had taken it with me."

While the Police radios and the radio have been in the car for a long time. They don't work because they have been left in the trunk of the car, since the time I was the security guard at a club in Tirana. I have not had and do not have problems with anyone..." - said Gëzim Këlmendi.

Despite this situation, the Tirana court has imposed the measure of "House Arrest" on Gëzim Këlmendi after the capital's prosecutor's office has already charged him with "Unlicensed Possession of Weapons and Ammunition", an offense that carries a sentence of 5 to 7 years in prison.
