The Special Court is today reviewing the request of former Prosecutor General, Adriatik Llalla, for the statute of limitations on the two-year prison sentence given to him in 2021 for concealing assets.
Nearly five years after the final decision, Llalla is requesting that the sentence be considered statute-barred, arguing that a period of time twice the length of the sentence has passed without him serving it.
This is an argument that has also been used by other convicted persons who, by evading justice, have remained wanted until the statute of limitations has expired.
During the investigation against him, at the height of the process, Llalla fled to Italy. However, the criminal case continued to be examined in Albania. He was arrested in Italy and placed under surveillance, but was not handed over to the Albanian authorities.
