Zero emotions, blunders, criticism and no goals: Ancelotti and the anonymous
Ancelotti

In South America – but not only – there was maximum attention for the official debut of the Italian Carlo Ancelotti on the bench as the new coach of the five-time world champions, Brazil. The match, valid for the World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF zone, saw Brazil as a guest of Ecuador: in the end there was only a lukewarm draw, goalless and emotionless, which disappointed most and was accompanied by the first criticism of the coach.

A debut also tainted by an unforgivable blunder that occurred shortly before the match, during the national anthems, when a completely wrong Brazilian flag entered the field.

Faith and hope demanded an attacking and winning Brazil in Ancelotti's first absolute debut as a coach, but the spectacle was completely different, with the "Selecao" confirming all the structural problems that the Italian coach has faced. Thus, the debut on the bench of the Brazilian national team ended with a gloomy goalless draw on the field of Ecuador, in a match valid for the 15th week of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, held at the Monumental stadium in Guayaquil.

Ancelotti tries to see the positive side

A match under the tone where Brazil only hit the opponent's goal twice, suffering the constant pressure of Ecuador that at times managed the match as it pleased. Brazil's 4-3-3 formation only shone in a few fleeting moments in the second half, with some (isolated) bursts from Vinicius that were not taken advantage of by his teammates. A very passive attitude, for which Ancelotti at the end of the match nevertheless appreciated the 'positive' part of what he saw on the pitch: "A very good match in terms of defense," - explained the coach - "the game was more fluid, the team was safe with the ball. In the end it was a good draw and we leave satisfied, with confidence for the next match that we will play at home. For me it was a special moment... after 1800 matches with clubs, being a coach here is a gift."

"It's not an excuse, but the field was unplayable"

There was no shortage of criticism, especially from those who immediately expected the "jogo bonito", the absence of which many had hoped for months to be replaced by the arrival of Ancelotti on the bench. But he has faced a Brazil in decline, still fourth in the South American group and protected from unpleasant surprises for qualification for the 2026 World Cup, but unable to express quality and spectacle combined with results.

"It's not an excuse," Ancelotti himself tried to emphasize in the post-match press conference, "but the pitch tonight was in bad conditions. It's not easy to play in such situations, it limited us."

The unforgivable blunder with the Brazilian flag before the match

To taint Ancelotti's debut with Brazil was another serious blunder just before kick-off, when the two national teams came out onto the pitch accompanied by their respective flags during the national anthems. Brazil's was completely wrong: inside the classic blue globe surrounded by a yellow diamond on a green background, there was a series of stars with no meaning.

This image immediately made the rounds on social networks, where bitter collective sarcasm erupted: “What about this Brazilian flag, did they buy it on Shopee?” (a widely used e-commerce site in Brazil). “Is it the new edition of the Brazilian flag?” “They got the Brazilian flag from ChatGPT” – these are just some of the countless mockeries about this unforgivable mistake in global broadcasting.
