Erling Haaland has already been confirmed as the fittest player of the 2022-2023 season in Europe. With his goals, he is leading Manchester City to the fifth title in the last six years, as well as realizing the dream of lifting the Champions League trophy at the Etihad.
The Norwegian giant is writing his name goal after goal in the history of English and European football. In the Premier League, Haaland has scored 34 goals so far, cementing the title of the continent's top scorer.
On Sunday against Fulham, the 22-year-old scored his 50th goal this season in all competitions played for City (34 in the Championship, 12 in Europe, 3 in the FA Cup and 1 in the League Cup).
The Norwegian thus became the player with the most goals scored in England in the last 92 years, when Tom "Pongo" Waring scored 50 goals for Aston Villa in the 1930-31 season.
But the record for goals scored in a single season is still a long way off for the former Borussia Dortmund striker. It is held by William "Dixie" Dean, who in the 1927-28 season scored 63 goals for Everton. Of these, he made 60 in the championship, helping his team to be declared champion. But while the league goalscoring record is unlikely, the one achieved in all competitions still has a chance.
Haaland scored his 50 goals in 44 games, while until the end of the season he can play 10 more, 6 in the Premier League, 3 in the Champions League and 1 in the FA Cup final against Manchester United.
Who was Dixie?
The former legendary coach of Liverpool called him the best center forward in history. While Dean himself - who passed away in 1980, once asked by the British media if anyone could break his record, was quoted as saying: "I think there is a man who can do it, but it is he who will be able to walk on the water".
Much shorter than the Norwegian, Dean is remembered in sports circles in Britain as a character even off the field. According to a story, told by him in 1977, in an interview for "The Guardian", before the derby with Liverpool he had sent the opposing goalkeeper Elisha Scott a package of aspirin and a letter that read "Sleep well tonight, because tomorrow you will to punish you - Billie Dean".
Dean claimed to have learned to play football with both feet, kicking rats while working with his father on the railroad. A year before he recorded the record of 63 goals, he almost lost his life in a motorcycle accident, where he suffered multiple injuries to his face.
How does he compare to Haaland?
Erling Haaland earns 375 thousand pounds a week, while Dean was paid at Everton only 8 pounds a week in the winter and 6 in the summer. Everton paid £3,000 to buy him from Tranmere Rovers in 1925, while City sent £51m into Dortmund's coffers.
After he left his career, a thrombosis forced doctors to amputate his right leg, and he spent the last years of his life in a wheelchair. He died in March 1980, at the age of 73, after watching an Everton-Liverpool derby at Goodison Park.
