Serbia national team coach Dragan Stojkovic, otherwise known as Pixi, held a fiery press conference before the matches against Albania and Andorra.
Serbia will begin the competition in Group K with matches against Albania in Tirana on June 7 and Andorra in Leskovac on June 10.
Stojkovic spoke about expectations from the match against Albania, which has been announced as a high-risk match, but also with a lot of emotions, and explained his decision not to recruit Sergej Milinković-Savič as long as he is the national team coach.
The Serbian coach also had a strong reaction to questions about the large number of rejections from Serbian players and stated that he would resign tomorrow if he is indeed the problem why some players do not want to play for the national team.
"I will resign immediately if I am the problem," said Pixi.
"The issue is with Svilar, not with me. Don't expect anyone to go to Rome – I can go for lunch, for an espresso, to watch a match – but going to beg someone, that's not going to happen."
Not only to Svilar, but to no one. You made a mistake in the steps, it's your mistake. Great, all the best, everyone has the right to make their own choices. It's up to them to accept whether they want to play or not. Then he said he would focus on his club because he had the opportunity to become a starter, he wanted to focus on that. He took the opportunity and I'm very happy about that.
Am I the problem? I will resign immediately after this conference, to be clear. Maybe not today, but tomorrow, if that is true. But I don't think so. There are players who saw that there was no place for them, and then they said: "I'm leaving." Well, you convinced me a lot... The team changes, players are called according to merit. Do you think that Lazovic from Verona, who fights for survival every year, is what Serbia needs? Dmitrovic? Excellent goalkeeper, but I decided on Petrovic. Was I wrong? Because I believe. And where is the problem? Dmitrovic angry? I am also angry that we didn't beat Slovenia.
You mentioned Radonjic. What's wrong? I don't like him? I don't like his hairstyle? He's destroying himself, he's destroying Zvezda, the national team and on top of that he's destroying himself. That's his issue. And you want to tell me that he deserves to be in the national team? As if we were crazy. I'm talking openly... I don't want to mention the names of some players, but what they give on the field has nothing to do with reality. What are you offering to be here? Now I call Radonjic, and you ask me why I called him - what can I say? To lie to you by telling you that that sprint against Stuttgart was fantastic... You don't play for a sprint.
"Everything is on merit, let them get angry as much as they want, that's their job. And those who don't play will always get angry. As long as I'm here, I'll decide who plays. The players' job is to show themselves and prove that I was right to call them. The responsibility is great and the players must understand this," said the Serbian coach.
Where will we host England?
"My stance is to do my job as best as possible, to prepare the team in the best way and to achieve the best result. I do not influence such decisions nor do I interfere in the policies of the FSS. Comparing forces in the corridors of Terazije 35 is unnecessary when I am in question. I am interested in Stara Pazova, Tirana, Leskovci and the match with Andorra. The question of where we will play against England is for the FSS. They will give the answer why Leskovci and not Belgrade, or vice versa," said Stojkovic.
