Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of this week. The Spanish coach is expected to manage the club's final two Premier League games against Bournemouth and Aston Villa before ending his spell at the Etihad.
Guardiola guided Manchester City to FA Cup glory on Saturday, beating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley. And it could be the Catalan's last trophy as City manager after a decade of success. City still have a slim chance of winning the title, but they must win their remaining two games and hope Arsenal drop points against Crystal Palace.
Guardiola has won six Premier League titles with Manchester City, including four in a row, a record. He also led the club to their first and only Champions League title, as well as three FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager has long been linked with a move away at the end of the season, with City now making key announcements ahead of an official announcement, which the Daily Mail reports is expected on Sunday. Guardiola's contribution to City will be celebrated with an open-top bus parade through Manchester on Monday, with players, the women's team and the academy. Former Leicester and Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is seen as the frontrunner to replace Guardiola. He was one of Pep's assistants at City during the 2022-23 season before taking charge of Leicester.
Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016, after four years at Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich. He won the league title in his second and third seasons at the Etihad, before losing the competition to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. A record four consecutive titles followed, before Arne Slott brought it back to Anfield last season. City lost the Champions League final to Chelsea in 2021, but Guardiola got revenge two years later when his team beat Inter Milan to win the Champions League for the first time. It was also the Spaniard's first major trophy as a manager since his triumph with Barcelona in 2010-11.
Maresca, the successor
In this situation, City have wasted no time and seem to have chosen a new coach.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the reigning champions have reached an agreement with Italian coach Enzo Maresca. The former Chelsea coach is expected to sign a three-year contract, taking over the management of the Citizens bench.
Maresca, who has a good knowledge of the internal structures, is seen as the right profile to lead this new sports project. British and international media have confirmed that the formalization of the agreement reached is expected to be made public by the offices of the English club within a few days. Preparations for the summer transfer market and the new transfer strategy will be coordinated immediately after the season is over and the official contract is signed.
