The income of European football is being distributed more and more among the 10 richest clubs of the continent, with a turnover that exceeds 500 million euros for each of them. Real Madrid returns to the top of the list, replacing Manchester City. Meanwhile, the top 20 clubs have recorded a record turnover of €10.5 billion, up 14% compared to €9.2 billion in the 2021/2022 season.
The increase in the 2022/2023 season was driven by the high number of matches and commercial revenues, which stand at 1.9 billion and 4.4 billion euros respectively. These are some of the figures released in the 27th edition of the Deloitte Football Money League, on the clubs that generated the highest revenue, excluding capital gains in the transfer market, for the 2022/23 season.
Commercial income represented the largest revenue stream for Money League clubs for the first time since the 2015/2016 season, excluding the 2019/2020 season due to the impact of Covid 19.
Notably, 17 of the top 20 clubs reported an increase in commercial income compared to the previous year, with the increase mainly attributable to improved retail sales, income from off-field events and a recovery in sponsorship income. that was affected by the pandemic.
Real Madrid returns to the top of the Money League table, for the first time since the 2017/2018 season with a record revenue of 831 million euros and an increase of 118 million euros, compared to the previous year. After "Los Blancos" come the European champions Manchester City with an income of 826 million euros, while in third place is Paris Saint-Germain with 802 million euros. Then comes Barcelona with 800 million euros and Manchester United with 746 million euros.
Fourth-placed Barcelona is one of the main protagonists of Money League 2024, having finished seventh last season. This improvement comes thanks to record revenues from licensing and merchandising, but also from the return of fans to stadiums. On the other hand, Liverpool, with 683 million euros in revenue, recorded the biggest drop in the annual ranking, dropping from third place to seventh, due to poor results on the field. Bayern Munich is sixth, realizing an income of 744 million euros, from 647 million in the previous season.
