Official: Formula 1 will take to the streets of Madrid in 2026

It's official and it's historic: Formula 1 will return to Madrid starting in 2026. The long-awaited deal that has been in the works for the past few months is now a reality, guaranteeing the future of the 'Grand Circus' in Spain for the next decade with a semi-urban district.

The ambitious plan is currently being presented with an event in Madrid attended by Domenicali, CEO of the championship and also Ayuso, president of the Community; Almeida, mayor of the capital and José Vicente de los Mozos, president of IFEMA. It will be called the Spanish GP and has a ten-year contract signed, until 2035.

The route has already been designed and will include a section with banks and clear crossing points, occupying some of the pavilions of the Palace of Congress of Madrid, plus the adjacent area. This inclusion in future calendars will indirectly affect the future of the current Spanish GP at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, so far confirmed for 2026, because the calendar does not allow more than 24 races per year .

The Madrid project is seen in two mirrors, Miami and Zandvoort. Because it will be an event designed to make the most of the hospitality areas, such as the famous Hard Rock Stadium paddock, using the IFEMA facilities; and because there will also be huge Spanish fans who have packed the home GP in recent seasons along with the recent good results of Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz.

Additionally, the track, designed by Jarno Zafelli's studio (who redesigned the Dutch track) will include services in larger spaces to generate a greater overtaking opportunity, a common weakness of urban tracks visited by F1. The track has 20 turns and the lap is more than 5 kilometers long, it will take about a minute and a half to describe. As it is kept relatively away from the main city centre, it will not have an excessive impact on traffic. The forecast capacity of the circuit is 110,000 spectators per day, with the idea of increasing it to 140,000.

The 2026 race is to be the first F1 race in Madrid since 1981: Jarama hosted the World Cup intermittently between 1968 which has been won by Graham Hill, Stewart, Fittipaldi, Lauda, Hunt, Mario Andretti and Gilles Villeneuve in history.. That's why the official slogan says that F1 returns to Madrid, although in a new scenario.
Precisely, this grand prize matches the two main objectives that Liberty Media pursues for the calendar: it is an event of historical tradition (the Spanish GP has been held for 53 editions, the seventh of all time) but at the same time with a modern preparation of directed towards the spectacle, in the style of Miami or Las Vegas, in a Latin and European city with great projection.
