Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo made his final appearance at the World Cup on Monday night. After the 1-0 defeat to Spain, Ronaldo reaffirmed that this was his last World Cup.
"It's sad, it's normal when you get eliminated like this," Ronaldo said.
The 41-year-old superstar's sixth and final World Cup didn't end the way he imagined, but he stressed that he gave it his all.
"I gave everything, I gave my best and I'm leaving with a clear conscience. This is football, this is life for a footballer. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose," he said.
Ronaldo, the only player to score in six consecutive World Cups and the career leader in international goals with 146, said the day before that he hoped this would not be his last match in the series and wanted to enjoy it to the fullest.
But he reiterated after the defeat to Spain that this was his last time at the tournament, which is played every four years. The longest he has ever reached at a World Cup was the semi-finals on his debut in 2006.
"Yes, it was my last World Cup, but for everything else I will have time to think, to be with my family, not to make any hasty decisions and to move on with life," he said.
Ronaldo was denied a goal in the first half against Spain when record-breaking goalkeeper Unai Simon made an impressive diving save. It was one of his three shots.
Two of them were on goal, including the one in which Simon was still in the air when he reached out to catch the ball with both hands.
Portugal had never won a major international tournament before Ronaldo. The first was the 2016 European Championship, before adding Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
Ronaldo's final appearance on football's biggest stage came eight years after he scored a World Cup hat-trick at the age of 33. That made him the oldest person to achieve it, a feat he held until Lionel Messi, then 38, scored a hat-trick for Argentina in a 3-0 win over Algeria on June 16.
