Brazil's elimination from the 2026 World Cup has sparked controversy and strong criticism of coach Carlo Ancelotti. The Selecao were defeated 2-1 by Norway, with Erling Haaland's brace in the last ten minutes, while Neymar's penalty in extra time did not change the final result: a defeat that marked the yellow-blue national team's worst performance in a World Cup since 1990, when they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Argentina.

Carletto, who took over as Brazil coach in May 2025, managed to qualify the team and renewed his contract until 2030 right on the eve of the World Cup, was particularly at the center of criticism. However, the premature elimination caused a wave of very harsh criticism from the media and fans.

"He made mistakes in the formation, in the decisions and in the reading of the match"

Among the most critical voices is that of Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who in a video published on social networks openly opposed the way the team was managed and especially that of Neymar. "Using Neymar in just one match? We don't have better players than Neymar. Any national team in the world would protect a player like him. A coach has the obligation to create a system that favors his main player, like Norway did with Haaland, waiting for one or two opportunities. But here in Brazil he was left aside."

The reference was also related to the late activation of the number 10 against Norway: Neymar only entered the field in the 67th minute, a choice criticized by many former Brazilian footballers and commentators.

Ancelotti, the contested election against Norway

Criticism of the Italian coach focused mainly on a few tactical decisions. The most controversial was the choice to give the first penalty to Bruno Guimarães, who missed it, despite having very little experience from the penalty spot: many thought that Vinícius Júnior or another striker should have taken it.

The substitution of the injured Lucas Paquetá with Gabriel Martinelli in midfield was also criticized, a move that most analysts said deprived the team of creativity and balance. Many Brazilian media outlets described Brazil as a passive, slow and lackluster team. According to critics, Ancelotti handed control of the game to Norway, relying mainly on counterattacks, failing to build a distinctive offensive system and failing to find a solution to stop Haaland at the end.

The weekly magazine Veja summed up the discontent with a very harsh headline: "Farewell, Ancelotti. Obrigado por nada", accusing the coach of not having properly appreciated a team full of talent.

"If he were Brazilian, his resignation would be demanded"

In his message, the former national team coach went beyond technical analysis, arguing that a Brazilian coach would have been treated much harsher: "Ancelotti made mistakes. He made mistakes in the formation, in the decisions and in the reading of the match; and thus we lost the opportunity to win the sixth star. If it were a Brazilian coach, the press would have already demanded his resignation, broadcast specials and declared the project a failure. Whereas with a foreigner there always seems to be an excuse, a desire to turn a blind eye and a level of patience that they have never shown towards us."

Luxemburgo called for a return to Brazilian football's identity: "Enough with this syndrome that makes us think that everything that comes from abroad is better. Brazilian football needs more Brazil. More identity, more confidence in our abilities and more respect for our professionals and for the essence of Brazilian football. Let them talk about the Premier League, the Champions League or whatever they want. For me, football remains synonymous with the iconic jersey, the colorful stands, the jokes and legends, the painted streets, the children watching their national team become champions for the first time and, above all, the passion that only Brazilians truly understand."

Ancelotti's absurd words and fans' criticism

Despite the storm of criticism, Ancelotti defended his work in the post-match press conference: “We had a good World Cup, not spectacular, but good. Today we deserved to win. This defeat is not the end, but the beginning of a new cycle.” Thus, the CBF confirmed its confidence in the coach, while president Rodrigo Caetano reiterated that Ancelotti’s contract remains in force until 2030. Meanwhile, the hashtags “Fora Ancelotti” and “culpa do Ancelotti” exploded on Brazilian social networks, with criticism directed especially at the substitutions, the management of Neymar and the penalty awarded to Bruno Guimarães. Some fans continue to defend the coach, but the dominant narrative remains that of a great disappointment for a World Cup from which Brazil hoped to win its sixth star.

Romário also joined the protest, commenting on the elimination in very harsh words: "It was unbelievable... this is not the Brazil we know. It's everyone's fault, the players and the coach alike." Few words, but the message was very clear.
