Official Athens does not give up its intervention in the internal affairs of Albania, this time claiming major irregularities in the local elections of Himara.
Greek officials are pressing Albania to address concerns about the integrity of Sunday's municipal elections in the southwestern town of Himara, according to Greek media.
"Claims by the Greek minority about the manipulation of the voter list and the denial of the right to vote due to expired identity cards raise serious doubts about the process," Greek officials told the Greek television "SKAI".
"Democratic principles and European standards require the Albanian authorities to address these concerns," continued the same unidentified sources.
In the Himara elections, the Socialist Party candidate Vangjel Tavo won with 58.62% of the votes, while Petro Gjikuria got 41.38%. Counting started shortly after midnight as both candidates were present.
Tavo thanked Prime Minister Edi Rama and invited Gjikuri to serve as deputy mayor.
