Prime Minister Edi Rama says Albania will not extend the 1-year ban on the social network TikTok.

In an interview with Politico, the head of government announced that they have reached a partnership with the platform and that they will soon present the new protective measures to the Albanian public.

" We are pleased with the result. We have made the partnership and I hope that in the coming weeks or months we will reveal the plan to the Albanian people, as we promised ," said the prime minister, adding that he was very surprised by TikTok's reaction after Albania's initial decision to ban the platform.

"Because at first, because it was normal to think that they would fight us, they would take revenge on us, they would harass us. I met them myself and I was very impressed by their attitude. They were listening very carefully to our points," Rama said from the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans Summit.

Rama acknowledged that the ban has not completely solved school violence, but said it has helped establish new protective mechanisms with TikTok. He also ruled out the possibility of Albania supporting general social media restrictions for minors, calling them ineffective, while reaffirming the goal of EU membership in 2030.

"This is nonsense. This is something that Albania will not consider. It does not work," he said, acknowledging that his government has looked into it, but "if you do not have a full disclosure of who is behind this, you will always be a victim of attacks by trolls and bots," the prime minister said.

The government decided to ban TikTok in March 2025 after about a year of talks with TikTok over online abuse.

The fatal stabbing of Martin Can outside a school in Tirana was the final straw, and the government ordered internet service providers to block access to both desktop and app versions.

However, this action provoked strong reactions from opposition parties and NGOs, which accused the government of censorship and of restricting political expression online.
