The Democrats in the House of Representatives of the US Congress demand that Congress investigate the relationship of former President Donald Trump's son-in-law with Edi Rama.
The petition was submitted by Congressmen Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia.
In the document, it is requested to investigate the possibility that the business agreements that Jared Kushner intends to sign with Albania and Serbia are achieved through the influence that Donald Trump's son-in-law has on the former President and perhaps the promise of political support in Washington if Trump is elected President again.
The two Democrats say these potential business deals could pose major threats to the national security of the United States of America.
Democrats refer to the New York Times article, which reported that Jared Kushner was close to finalizing investment deals in Albania and Serbia, leveraging relationships he built during his time as a senior White House adviser to his father-in-law. .
In pursuing investment opportunities in Albania, Kushner and his adviser, according to the article, Richard Grenell, another former senior Trump administration official, have openly used their relationship with Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania. Referring to the McGonigal case, the Democrats claim that it was during the presidency of Donald Trump that Edi Rama made illegal payments in the US.
Kushner's projects in Albania and Serbia
Donald Trump's son-in-law has confirmed that he is in discussions with the authorities in Serbia and Albania to develop some construction projects.
In Serbia, he plans the construction of two residential buildings, a hotel and services in the place where today the bombed building of the former Yugoslav army headquarters is located.
The project has sparked opposition in Belgrade, where in just 24 hours over 10,000 people have signed a petition to stop it.
In Albania, Jared Kushner designs hotels, resorts and luxury villa complexes in Sazan, Zvërnec and Ksamil.
The idea in Sazan has also been confirmed by Prime Minister Edi Rama. He said that the investment is serious, but that it is still under consideration by the Albanian authorities.
"This Committee cannot claim to be 'investigating efforts by foreign nationals' to target and coerce family members of senior US officials by offering money or other benefits in exchange for certain actions, while continuing to ignore these issue", wrote the two Democratic legislators.
Kushner told the Times that the deals, through his investment firm Affinity Partners, have not yet been finalized but are "very close."
Kushner's firm is already under fire from Democrats for the $2 billion in funding it received from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund at a time when the crown prince was accused of the gruesome murder of journalist Khashoggi.
