Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced the launch of a broad operation to eradicate the so-called car cemeteries which, according to him, exist in Albania as illegal structures.
During a public statement, Rama emphasized that the country is still at a primitive stage in waste treatment and that a new law on waste management, fully aligned with EU directives, will be passed by Parliament within this year.
"The next challenge is the approximation with EU directives and this new law undertakes to do this, to approximate EU directives 100% with Albanian legislation.
If we have made significant progress in cleaning, if we have made progress in keeping the country and beaches clean, especially during the season, and if we have made significant progress in waste treatment, we are in a completely primitive situation in relation to the separation of waste at source, with the extended responsibility of producers, which includes paper, glass, and vehicles.
We are probably the only country in Europe that has car cemeteries legalized without a law, but with the will of Maliqi in the territory as faits accompli. This will be an operation that has just begun and will continue to eliminate all these cemeteries and we are a country that still has no obligation for manufacturers, distributors and importers with what I said, for the treatment and what happens to all these materials when they carry out their mission as packaging, electrical equipment or as vehicles. For this, we have a law that will be passed in the Parliament within this year", declared Prime Minister Rama.
